Bắc Giang ensures supply of key agricultural products

HÀ NỘI In 2024, Bắc Giang plans to produce 160,050 tonnes of lychee (with domestic consumption accounting for 45 per cent and export accounting for 54 per cent).

The northern province also expects to produce 30,500 tonnes of oranges (of which Đường Canh orange will be 18,000 tonnes), and 40,500 tonnes of grapefruit (of which Diễn grapefruit will be 22,800 tonnes).

Additionally, Bắc Giang is expected to produce 261,000 tonnes of livestock products (pigs, poultry, buffalo, cows and goats); 54,000 tonnes of fish; 554,700 tonnes of rice; 19,340 tonnes of peanuts; and 495,504 tonnes of vegetable crops.

According to Deputy Director of Bắc Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Lê Bá Thành, the total consumption of lychee in Bắc Giang province in 2023 surpassed 201,600 tonnes. Of which, early ripe lychee consumption was over 55,600 tonnes while main season lychee consumption was nearly 146,000 tonnes. Bắc Giang lychee is consumed favourably in the domestic market and mainly exported as fresh fruit. The rest are processed products like canned lychees, dried lychees and frozen lychees.

In 2023, the province exported nearly 111,200 tonnes of lychees, which were mainly prioritised for going through the green channel with favourable customs clearance to the Chinese market (accounting for about 98 per cent of total exported lychees). The remainder was sent to over 30 other countries and territories, such as the United States, Japan, Korea, Australia, Europe, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar and some countries in the Middle East.

Also in 2023, the entire Bắc Giang province has a total area of 5,469 hectares under grapefruit, with an estimated output of 40,500 tonnes (Green Skin, Đào, and Diễn Bình grapefruit); 3,485 hectares of oranges, with an estimated yield of 35,000 tonnes (including Vinh Đường Canh oranges). Bắc Giang’s oranges and grapefruits are mainly consumed in the domestic market, mostly in Hà Nội and neighbouring provinces.

The area under vegetables in Bắc Giang province in 2023 is approximately 26,204 hectares, producing an output of 469,098 tonnes. About 50 per cent of vegetables is consumed in the province (of which 10 per cent is supplied to the four fruit and vegetable processing facilities in the area).

The remaining 50% of vegetables is supplied to such localities as Hà Nội, Hải Phòng, and Quảng Ninh. Bắc Giang’s supply capacity in the last months of this year is set to reach about 115,000 tonnes of vegetables of all kinds.

To date, the amount of all types of meat produced in Bắc Giang is estimated at 211,635 tonnes. Egg production is estimated at 200 million eggs. The province’s livestock products are mainly sold to Hà Nội, Hải Phòng, Quảng Ninh, Hưng Yên, Lạng Sơn, Cao Bằng, Bắc Kạn, Đồng Nai, Bình Phước, Huế, and Đà Nẵng (accounting for up to 80 per cent).

The remaining 20 per cent of livestock products are for intra-provincial sale. In the last months of 2023, Bắc Giang province is able to produce for the market a total of about 47,565 tonnes of meat of all types. – VNS
