Australia PM set to make maiden Vietnam visit

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will visit Vietnam this weekend at the invitation of his counterpart Pham Minh Chinh, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a release.

It will be Albanese’s first visit to the country since assuming office in May 2022, and will come amid the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Albanese is expected to meet several top leaders and discuss ways to strengthen bilateral commercial, investment and educational ties and cooperation in climate, the environment and energy.

Vietnam and Australia established diplomatic ties in 1973, and upgraded the relationship to a strategic partnership in March 2018.

Commercial ties are a mainstay of the relationship.

Australia has also deployed the Aus4Skills program, where over $141 million has been spent to support Vietnam with education and training, among other purposes.
