Every time I say I want to drive my wife’s car, which was a birthday gift from my in-laws and worth VND1 billion (US$39,450), my wife refuses.
My wife and I got married last year and we don’t have children yet. I work at an import-export company and earn VND30 million per month. I’m not sure about my wife’s exact income, but I know she has a side hustle beside her main job. Each month, we spend about VND40 million, including a fairly high rent for a house in Hanoi.
We agreed that each of us would contribute VND20 million per month for expenses. I don’t know how much money my wife has left after contributing, but sometimes I notice that she buys expensive skincare products. Of course, she never tells me their prices; I have to find out the prices on the Internet myself.
Recently, for my wife’s birthday, her parents gave her a car to use for her daily commute. Since then, every morning I ride my motorbike to my company, which is about 12 kilometers away, while my wife drives the car to her workplace, which is only 3 kilometers away. I suggested that I could drive her to work and then go to my company afterward, and pick her up in the evening so we could go home together. However, my wife refused, saying she is used to driving and doesn’t need me to drop her off and pick her up.
Sometimes, when my friends get together, I want to drive the car, but my wife doesn’t agree. She says that drinking then driving is dangerous and suggests I take a taxi instead. I feel that my wife is just using this as an excuse to avoid sharing the car with me.
