Taiwan to join Thailand, Japan to offer digital nomad visa

Taiwan plans to launch a special visa for digital nomads, which will be valid for up to six months, to boost its tourism growth in a similar move to several other Asian economies.

Paul Liu, head of Taiwan’s Development Council, said his agency was proposing to work with the foreign affairs agency to issue special visas for digital nomads as part of its plan to boost domestic tourism and the economy, Focus Taiwan newspaper reported.

Authorities hope to attract 100,000 digital nomads and have at least 10,000 reside long-term in Taiwan, he added.

However, Taiwanese authorities have not yet revealed the eligibility requirements to obtain its digital nomad visa.

Liu said many other economies including Japan, Thailand and South Korea have been developing measures to attract digital nomads, Taipei Times reported.

Thailand’s Destination Thailand Visa, which came into effect from July 22, allows digital nomads to stay in the country for up to 180 days with five-year multiple entry permission.

South Korea also implemented the Workation Visa, which grants digital nomads a one-year stay that they can extend for another year.

Japan last March introduced a visa for digital nomads, allowing them to stay in the country for six months.
