A trial opened in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday involving two former heads of the Vietnam Register and 252 others, facing multiple charges including bribery and neglect, which enabled violations in vehicle registration procedures.
This trial, the largest in Vietnam’s history, is scheduled to last three months.
The widespread investigation into vehicle registration violations uncovered a systematic and organized corruption case, implicating the leadership of the Vietnam Register and numerous vehicle registration centers nationwide.
Former head of the Vietnam Register, Dang Viet Ha, has been charged with receiving bribes, while his predecessor, Tran Ky Hinh, was charged of both receiving bribes and abusing power, according to documents submitted to the HCMC People’s Court.
Prosecutors allege that Ha is responsible for receiving over VND40 billion ($1.57 million) in bribes, with personal profits amounting to $359,729.
Authorities report that Hinh received over $279,000 in bribes.
Both Ha and Hinh were arrested in January last year.
