LÂM ĐỒNG — A landslide in the central highlands province of Lâm Đồng early Monday morning killed one member in a family of four, whose home was buried under tonnes of earth and debris.
According to initial reports, the incident took place in the Đam Rông District at around 4am today while the family of Đặng Quang Lành was asleep.
He and his two children managed to escape, while his wife, whose name initials were given as N.T.T, was dead by the massive volume crushed into the home.
The surrounding residents immediately reported to local authorities and joined the rescue force. Dozens of officers and vehicles from the Lâm Đồng Economic-Defence Corps (under Military Region 7), which are stationed nearby, also arrived at the scene.
As of 9am the same day, rescue efforts and site clearance were still ongoing.
According to Đam Rông District People’s Committee chairman Trương Hữu Đồng, the family’s properties have been moved to safety.
Local authorities will provide the victim’s family with VNĐ20 million (US$790) as support while also offering assistance for funeral arrangements.
Lâm Đồng has been witnessing prolonged rains due to a recent tropical depression. Forecasts say the province is among the 12 localities at risk of flash floods and landslides in the next six hours. — VNS
