My in-laws demand profit from selling my house

Six years ago, my in-laws bought us an apartment worth over VND2 billion (US$78,647), and now they want a share of the profits since we found a higher-paying buyer.

I have been married for 12 years, and my husband, our two children, and I currently reside in an apartment bought by my in-laws, which is still registered in their names.

Following the construction of a new road, our apartment’s location has become highly desirable, leading to a buyer’s offer of VND4.7 billion. My husband and I plan to purchase another apartment for VND3 billion, which would offer better convenience for our commute to work and school after the sale. We aim to deposit the leftover funds into a savings account and use the monthly interest for our children’s schooling.

However, my in-laws have decided they will keep all the profits from the sale and only return the VND2 billion they initially invested. They plan to use the additional funds for investments with their friends.

My husband feels unable to challenge this since the money originally belonged to his parents, and we must accept whatever they decide to provide. But I am growing increasingly frustrated as my in-laws are being quite mercenary with their own family. With just over VND2 billion, purchasing a spacious and conveniently located apartment for a family of four is proving difficult.

I realize that dwelling on this issue is detrimental to me, but I can’t help feeling more distressed the more I think about it. Since my in-laws have “turned their backs” on us, I find it hard to maintain the same level of warmth and closeness with them as before.

Is it justified for me to feel this way?
