Coach Kiatisuk to persevere despite club’s poor form

Hoang Anh Gia Lai FC’s coach Kiatisuk Senamuang admitted that he is in the worst stint of his career, though his team’s 2-0 victory over Hanoi FC helped relieve some of the pressure off his shoulders.

“This is the worst period of my career, both as a player and a manager,” said Kiatisuk at the press conference after the V-League game against Hanoi FC on Wednesday. “But I always understand that being a coach means I have to persevere in the face of failure to motivate my players.”

The Thai coach revealed that upon returning to his role as Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s coach in February 2020, his goal was to win the V. League. The league being canceled in 2021 due to Covid-19 was unfortunate for the club, who was then on an excellent run of form.

They could not maintain such a level in the following two seasons, finishing 6th in 2022 and 10th in 2023. They did not enjoy a great start to this season either, drawing two and losing five in their first seven games before beating Hanoi FC.

A Hoang and Jhon Cley gave Hoang Anh Gia Lai a two-goal lead after an energizing first half at their home stadium in Pleiku. Despite the immense pressure forced upon him by Hanoi FC’s attackers, keeper Phan Dinh Vu pulled off some phenomenal saves to give his team their first taste of victory this season.

Kiatisuk said the team had been hungry for a win to get themselves out of the bottom of the table and regarded Wednesday result as a fitting reward for their efforts. He also thanked the club’s newly-appointed technical director Vu Tien Thanh, who has been working with him for only four days.

“While I am quite relaxed with my players, he is a tough man, so we complement each other well. We will continue to discuss to figure out the best approach for the team in the coming time,” said Kiatisuk.

The win against Hanoi is not enough to lift Hoang Anh Gia Lai out of the bottom spot as they are still one point shy of Ha Tinh and Khanh Hoa. However, Kiatisuk believes it gave the club a much-needed morale boost going into the one-month break when the national team participate in the 2023 Asian Cup in January.
