Indonesian authorities have detained a female tourist for photographing herself naked at a 700-year-old Kayu Putih tree in Bali.
The woman was the second person to do so in a year.
She is now under investigation but her identity and nationality have not yet been revealed, Indonesia news site Coconuts Bali reported.
Her nude photo taken by the holy tree, which is on the grounds of a temple in Bayan Village, has gone viral on social media, prompting the government to step in.
The sacred Kayu Putih tree, also known as the Bayan Ancient Tree, is behind a temple in the village of Bayan in Bali’s Tabanan regency. Hindus believe all banyans are ancient trees that represent the earth’s divine creator.
Last year, a Russian social media influencer was deported after she posed nude at the tree and uploading the photos online.
The Indonesian government is considering taxing foreign tourists to restore Bali’s tourism image following a series of recent public disorder violations involving foreigners.
