Four killed as truck plows into mountainside in central Vietnam

A truck carrying watermelons was going downhill when it plowed into a mountainside in Phu Yen Province, leaving four dead and five injured.

The accident took place Monday morning as the truck was moving on Provincial Road DT643 in the central province’s Tuy An District.

When traveling down the road, the truck flipped and crashed into the mountainside. On the street a skid mark stretching several tens of meters could clearly be seen.

Local people took six people out of the truck and sent them to Phu Yen General Hospital but one died en route to the hospital.

Firefighters arrived later and rescued three others stuck inside the truck’s cabin but all three of them had died.

The driver was among the dead.

Doctor Tran Anh Dung at Phu Yen General Hospital said of the five people admitted to the hospital, one is in life-threatening conditions.

Provincial Road DT643 runs 30 kilometers long and is normally used by truck drivers to transport goods and farm products.

It has been degraded, posing threats to drivers.
