Second yellow card for Van Toan not necessary: Vietnam midfielder

Midfielder Nguyen Hoang Duc said the referee was quite strict when showing a second yellow card to Vietnamese striker Van Toan in the AFF Cup game against Malaysia Tuesday.

At the 13th minute of the game held in Hanoi, Nguyen Van Toan received a yellow card in an attempt to prevent a counter-attack and fouled Malaysia’s Darren Lok.

Then Japanese referee Ryuji Sato gave him another yellow card at the 32nd minute when Vietnam led with one score. Toan got the second yellow after putting his foot out and tripping Dominic Tan to stop a counter-attack, causing Vietnam to play with 10 men.

Speaking after the game, midfielder Hoang Duc said: “I don’t think Van Toan deserved a second yellow card.”

Several experts have the same idea, saying that most referees will not give Toan a second yellow that results in a send-off, or a red card as his second fault was not serious and he had already got a card in the game. Instead, they would just have “warned” him.

Vietnam’s coach Park Hang-seo said Van Toan did not intentionally foul the Malaysian player.

However, he treated this case as a lesson for the team.

Despite playing with ten people, Vietnam won 3-0 to take the top of Group B.
