Mekong province to tackle urban flooding

Hau Giang Province in the Mekong Delta is set to carry out extensive work to improve drainage in its flood-prone second biggest town.

Set to be carried out in 2023-26 in Nga Bay, the VND1.2-trillion (US$48.4 million) work will include installation of 20km of pipes, 22 sewer gates, three kilometers of embankment along three canals, and four water pumping stations.

There would also be a 13-km sewer system to carry away wastewater and a treatment plant with a capacity of 3,800 cubic meters a day, Nguyen Van Hoa, vice chairman of the province, said Tuesday.

A reservoir will be renovated, and equipment for monitoring and warning against natural disasters will be installed.

A loan of VND780 billion will be provided by the French Development Agency, and the rest will come from Hau Giang’s coffers.

Nga Bay, which is 78 sq.km in size and has a population of 60,000, is a major waterway traffic hub in the Mekong Delta, 30 km from the delta’s capital Can Tho. The town frequently suffers from flooding, which results in pollution.
