2nd monkeypox patient discharged from hospital

A 38-year-old woman, the second monkeypox patient in Vietnam, went home from hospital Monday after two weeks of treatment.

A native of the northern Tuyen Quang Province, she was diagnosed with the disease on Oct. 20 and treated at the HCMC Hospital for Tropical Disease.

She traveled to Dubai from September 29 to October 18 and developed symptoms including fever, nausea and blisters there.

She and Vietnam’s first monkeypox patient had stayed at the same hotel in Dubai.

When the first patient learned that her friend had developed similar symptoms, she informed the HCMC Center for Disease Control (HCDC).

She had been discharged on Oct. 14 after three weeks of treatment.

Most monkeypox patients recover in 10-14 days and stop being contagious after 21 days.

Since monkeypox suddenly started spreading across the world in May, as of Oct. 20 some 73,000 in more than 100 countries and territories have contracted it, 26 fatally.
