HCMC has fined Miss Universe Vietnam’s organizing committee VND70 million ($2,990) for allowing a judge to walk the red carpet wearing a see-through ao dai that revealed her breast patch.
The Saigon Universe Joint Stock Company, the owner of Miss Universe Vietnam, was administratively sanctioned by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee for organizing beauty and model contest “using costumes, words, sounds, images, movements, means of expression, and forms of performing acts contrary to the nation’s customs and traditions.”
This company was also barred from organizing beauty and model contests for a period of nine months beginning July 29.
Pham Van Dung, chief inspector of the HCMC Department of Culture and Sports’ consulting unit, stated Monday that the company’s representative has paid the fines, acknowledged its mistake and pledged not to repeat it.
The company had hosted on June 25 the Miss Universe Vietnam 2022 final, which included Vietnam’s super model Vu Nguyen Ha Anh.
She wore a see-through version of ao dai, a Vietnamese traditional attire, by designer Ly Qui Khanh. The outfit revealed the model’s breast patch when photographed with a camera flash.

Ha Anh later apologized on her personal page, saying she was “sad and embarrassed” that the “unflattering images” were shown to the public.
“If I had known about the possibility of this incident, I would have never allowed it to happen. I need to be more cautious next time,” she wrote.
The designer also apologized to the public, saying that he and Ha Anh’s crew both forgot to take a flash test before attending the event.
Ha Anh, 40, was a top 10 finisher at the Miss Universe Vietnam 2008 contest and named second runner-up at the Miss Vietnam Global 2008.
She was one of the judges at the Miss Universe Vietnam 2022 contest.
