Two-year football ban for player who punched referee

VFF General Secretary Le Hoai Anh said the punching was bad behavior and needed to be dealt with strictly. He hoped the incident and its aftermath would help players in the leagues to improve their professionalism, which would improve the image of Vietnamese football.

After reviewing the incident, VFF has decided to fine Vu VND25 million ($1,078) and suspend him for 24 months from football activities organized by VFF.

Vu’s club Binh Thuan FC were promoted to the V. League 2 next year, but he won’t be able to play for the team.

Vu hit referee Tran Ngoc Nho during a Binh Thuan match against Vinh Phuc FC in Vietnam’s third division league on Wednesday.

He committed a dangerous tackle in the 32nd minute of a play-off match that would decide promotion to V. League 2. He received a yellow card, which was his second in the game and he had to be sent off.

Enraged, Vu chased after the referee and hit him. As his teammates restrained him, he continued verbally abusing the referee. Vu also gestured to the crowd as some police officers escorted him out.
