In the Women’s AFF Cup this year, Australia are threatening Vietnam’s chance of defending the title.
The draw put Vietnam in an easy group B with Myanmar, Timor Leste, Cambodia and Laos. As the defending champions, Vietnam are predicted to get past the group stage and qualify for the semifinals without any difficulty.
However, Australia will send their strongest squad to the competition and of course, will be the heaviest contender for the title.
At 2018 AFF Cup, Australia sent the U20 team to the tournament and thrashed Vietnam in the semifinals before finishing as runner-ups.
Four years later, Australia are returning to the tournament with the goal to win the title and prepare for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Australia are one of the strongest women’s football teams in the world. They have played the World Cup seven times and their best result was making the quarterfinals. Australia are 12th in world rankings and second in Asia.
In AFF Cup this year, Australia are in group A with Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Australia and Thailand are both contenders for slots in the semifinals.
In group B, Vietnam and Myanmar are the contenders. Vietnam will try to claim the top spot of group B to avoid the top team of group A in the semifinals, which will most likely be Australia.
2022 AFF Cup will be hosted in the Philippines from July 4 to 17. Vietnam and Thailand hold the most titles with three each.
