Head coach of Vietnam women’s team Mai Duc Chung showed the determination to win the third consecutive SEA Games gold medal after defeating Myanmar in the semifinals on Wednesday.
“I really want it, but we still have 90 minutes ahead to achieve our target. Right now we will focus on recovering our stamina for the final with Thailand,” Chung said after the semifinal game in Cam Pha Stadium in the northern province of Quang Ninh.
Chung is the most decorated women’s football coach in Vietnam. He has won four SEA Games gold with the team and two of them were in 2017 and 2019. Another win against Thailand in the upcoming final will help him complete the historic SEA Games gold medal hattrick.
With the support of nearly 20,000 home fans, Vietnam completely dominated the game against Myanmar. However, they could only score one thanks to captain Huynh Nhu’s header.
“In this game, my players have competed with great spirit, although there were still some points that needed to be improved in terms of tactics and coordination. In general, the two teams were both strong, but Vietnam were better in possession and had more shots,” Chung said.
There were opinions that Vietnam were dependent on the overage players, but Chung disagreed.
“It’s unfair to say that. A team must be balanced. If there are only veteran players, they will run out of stamina quickly. If we only have young players, then we won’t have experience. We have to balance it out, that’s our intention,” he added.
Chung also showed appreciation for the fans who have lined up from 3 a.m. to buy tickets for the game. He said such acts have encouraged the fighting spirit of players.
