7th suspect of Abby Choi murder arrested in China

A Hong Kong woman has been arrested in China in connection with the gruesome murder of model Abby Choi, becoming the 7th person detained in the case.

The suspect was handed over to Hong Kong police at a border control point on Tuesday, a source familiar with the case told South China Morning Post.

He said the woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender in relation to the 28-year-old socialite’s killing. She was the third person arrested for assisting an offender in a murder case that first came to light on Feb. 24.

Meanwhile, the sixth suspect, a 41-year-old man was granted bail at HK$50,000 ($6,368) on Monday by a court, after prosecutors accused him of trying to help one of the alleged killers flee the city, as reported by The Strait Times.

Choi’s gruesome murder has attracted worldwide media attention. She was reported missing on Feb. 21 and several body parts, including her legs, were found on Feb. 24.

Her head was found two days later, together with other body parts, in a large soup pot in a rented village house in Tai Po, a suburb of Hong Kong. Officers also seized a meat grinder, electric saw and knives.

Kwong and three others have been charged in connection with the brutal killing. The three are Kwong’s brother, father and mother. They are scheduled to appear in court again on May 8.

The mastermind behind the murder is believed to be Kwong’s father and Choi’s former father-in-law, Kwong Kau, 65, a former policeman. The police say a property dispute is a possible motive for the murder.
