$42M bridge to be built over central Vietnam lagoon

A bridge over a lagoon in central Thua Thien-Hue Province will be built at a cost of over VND1 trillion ($42.4 million), as approved by the provincial People’s Council.

The bridge, which will connect Phu Da Town and Vinh Xuan Commune in Phu Vang District, will span around 3 km. The project includes a bridge built over the Tam Giang Lagoon, spanning 1.4 km, and two roads leading onto the bridge, spanning 1.6 km.

The project is expected to begin construction in 2024 and be completed after four years. It would contribute to the main traffic network in the region, creating incentives for socioeconomic growth in Phu Vang District and coastal communes, the provincial People’s Committee said.

People traveling to coastal communes of Phu Vang District from Hue City and Phu Da Town now need to do so through provincial roads and a highway. But both routes are small and cut through highly populated areas.

The current traffic connectivity between the east side and the west side of the Tam Giang Lagoon is not ideal, affecting regional socioeconomic development, especially tourism. A trip from coastal communes like Vinh Xuan and Phu Dien to the Phu Vang District People’s Committee normally spans 15 km, but a direct path through the Tam Giang Lagoon is around 3 km.

The Tam Giang-Cau Hai lagoon system covers around 68 km, running though Hue City, Phong Dien, Quang Dien, Phu Vang and Phu Loc districts. It is the largest brackish water lagoon system in Southeast Asia, with a rich ecosystem.

There are five bridges over the Tam Giang-Cau Hai Lagoon in Thua Thien-Hue: Tam Giang, Thuan An, Truong Ha, Dai Loc and Tu Hien.
