$322-mln bridge proposed across Mekong tributary

Dong Thap Province has proposed a bridge across the Tien River, a Mekong tributary, to boost regional connectivity.

Sa Dec Bridge will stretch 2.5 kilometers apart from 11 kilometers of leading roads to link Sa Dec Town and Cao Lanh District.

The bridge will have four lanes for vehicles to move at 80 kph, Dong Thap authorities proposed at a meeting on Wednesday with the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The province estimated that the bridge will cost VND8 trillion ($322 million) and asked for loans from the ADB and JICA.

If approved, it will start work on the project in 2026 for completion in 2031.

The province said the bridge will link with An Huu – Cao Lanh Expressway, on which construction has started.

Once completed, it will boost connectivity not just for Dong Thap but the Mekong Delta because the expressway will link to Trung Luong – My Thuan Expressway, which runs through Tien Giang Province to connect with HCMC – Trung Luong Expressway, the only expressway linking Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta.

There are now three bridges across the Tien River and two others under construction.
