3 firefighters die battling Hanoi blaze

Three firefighters died while trying to extinguish a fire that broke out at a 6-storey karaoke parlor on Quan Hoa Street in Hanoi’s Cau Giay District Monday afternoon.

The fire broke out at around 1 p.m. on the 6th floor of the karaoke parlor Isis, which is surrounded by corrugated iron and a steel frame. The owner was reconstructing the place.

The fire then spread to the basement.

After receiving the news, two fire trucks from the Cau Giay District Firefighting Station were rushed to the scene.

When the call center received a request for additional assistance at 2:16 p.m., it dispatched a ladder truck and a fire truck from Dong Da District Police.

The center got a call at 3:28 p.m. reporting three dead victims, all of them members of the Cau Giay District Police’s Fire Prevention and Fighting Team. The three were identified as Dang Anh Quan, the captain, and two others Do Duc Viet and Nguyen Dinh Phuc.

It is said that they were approaching the fire when the stairs collapsed, blocking the exit and depriving them of oxygen.

The three bodies were retrieved an hour later. Five fire trucks and approximately 20 firefighters remained on the scene.

A section of Quan Hoa Street has been closed off.
