$25M anti-erosion embankments proposed for HCMC

Three anti-erosion embankment projects worth over VND600 billion (US$25.5 million) are being proposed for Ho Chi Minh City.

The projects, by the Can Giuoc, Cho Dem and Saigon rivers, are part of 11 initiatives proposed by the Department of Transport and which will be presented before the municipal People’s Council for approval in a July meeting.

The areas where the projects would be located all have high erosion risks, which would affect surrounding neighborhoods. The largest embankment was proposed by the Can Giuoc River’s section in Binh Chanh District, worth around VND274 billion. The erosion-prone section spans around 160 m.

Also in Binh Chanh, a project to build embankments and dredge the Cho Dem-Ben Luc River would cost around VND233 billion. The erosion-prone section spans around 200 m.

The third project would be located next to the Saigon River in Binh Thanh District, which would cost around VND106 billion. The erosion-prone section spans around 100 m.

HCMC has around 32 locations prone to erosion, which affects over 1,300 families. Eight of the locations are in Thu Duc City, followed by seven locations each in Nha Be and Can Gio Districts.
