2 men fined for spreading false information about late Party leader Trong

Two people in HCMC were fined for posting fabricated information about the achievements and contributions of late Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Police in districts 10 and 12 on Monday fined two men, both aged 39, a total of VND13 million (US$513.12) for sharing false, unfounded, fabricated information that harmed the reputation of organizations and individuals.

Last Friday news of Trong’s passing began to be shared among people, both inside and outside Vietnam.

While most showed respect to what Trong had achieved and contributed to Vietnam and its people, the cybersecurity division of HCMC police found that certain individuals had spread false and fabricated information that denied Trong’s achievements and contributions.

The posts and comments with such information had been heavily criticized by many people online, the police added.

Three Facebook account owners were summoned by the police for further questioning.

Besides fining the two men, the police also warned another man aged 38.
