Two people were killed when a train rammed into a pickup truck with four passengers at a grade crossing in the southern Dong Nai province Sunday night.
At around 9 p.m. a guard closed the gate at the Pham Van Thuan Street crossing in Bien Hoa to allow a train to pass.
At that moment a man driving the truck with a woman and two children inside unexpectedly emerged from an alley off Pham Van Thuan Street.
There was no barrier between the alley and the tracks, and the vehicle was struck by the train and thrown 10 m onto the sidewalk where it hit a sanitation worker who was cleaning the street, killing the unlucky man instantly.
A boy sitting in the front of the truck was tossed outside and also died. The truck driver and remaining passengers were seriously injured.
The front of the vehicle was crushed and the driver’s side airbag had deployed. Debris from the truck flew far, causing panic among pedestrians, who fled, seeking to escape.

The crossing has barriers on both sides of Pham Van Thuan Street but not on alleys. According to some witnesses, the guard lowered the barrier on both ends of the road and sounded a warning whistle as the train approached, but the truck driver seemed oblivious.
Pham Van Thuan Street was cordoned off after the accident as the police examined the scene and investigated the cause of the accident. The wrecked truck was towed away by 10:15 p.m.
