The second runway and taxiways at Long Thanh, the country’s biggest airport, will cost VND3.455 trillion (US$138 million), with completion expected by 2027, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam has said.
They belong to the Phase 2 of the Long Thanh airport project, which comprises two components.
Besides a 4,000-meter-long runway parallel to the first runway and taxiways, the first component will include connecting roads, signal lights, signage, air traffic management equipment, and other related infrastructure.
They will come up on the 1,810 hectares of land handed over for phase 1 of the airport in Dong Nai Province bordering HCMC.
The second component involves ground leveling for the T3 terminal to spread over 181 ha and cost VND1.95 trillion.
According to the ACV, the first phase of the airport is on schedule, with the passenger terminal and first runway to be ready for commercial use by 2026.
Phase 1 will have a capacity of 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually.
Referring to funding, the ACV said the second runway would be built with its own resources, while the ground leveling for T3 terminal would be financed by the Ministry of Transport.
The airport will spread over an area of 5,000 ha in Long Thanh District. It is classified as a 4F-level facility and envisioned to become one of the region’s key air transport hubs.
Its total estimated cost is around USD$16.06 billion, divided into three phases.
Phase 1 will see the construction of one runway and passenger terminal each and supporting infrastructure.
Phase 2 will add a runway and terminal, increasing the capacity to 50 million passengers a year.
Phase 3 will see the completion of all remaining components, which will take its capacity to 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo per year.
Nearly 4,000 engineers and workers, both domestic and foreign, and over 2,000 machines are currently working at the site.
