Without its famed striker Cong Phuong, Hoang Anh Gia Lai managed to secure its first win after 12 rounds at V.League after beating the No.2 team Becamex Binh Duong 2-1 on Sunday.
Becamex Binh Duong, who dropped to 2nd place after losing 1-2 to Khanh Hoa in the previous round, was hoping a win at that away game would help them take back the leading position from Thanh Hoa.
Cong Vinh scored a goal for Becamex Binh Duong just two minutes into the game after outrunning Hoang Anh Gia Lai defenders to defeat goalkeeper Van Tien.
In the 24th minute, Cong Vinh had another goal, but it was disallowed for offside.
Only two minutes later, Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s 19-year-old midfielder Thanh Tung leveled the score, striking the ball in from a corner kick.
It was also Thanh Tung that scored the winning goal in the 50th minute, hitting a side-footed volley out of the air and into the goal.
Both goalkeepers put on a good performance as two teams took turns attacking and defending.
In the 87th minute, Becamex Binh Duong’s Cheik Abass Dieng had the ball in the back of the net only to be denied by the offside flag.
Thanh Hoa maintained its leading position despite losing 1-2 to host Dong Tam Long An.
After 17 rounds, Sanna Khanh Hoa’s Iheroume Uche and Quang Nam’s Tambwe Patiyo leads the top scorers’ table with 11 goals each, followed by Hoang Dinh Tung of Thanh Hoa with 10 goals.
