Miss Vietnam, the country’s biggest beauty contest, this year will ask applicants for more than just being single.
“Contestants must be those who have never registered for marriage, or organized wedding, or lived with another in a husband-and-wife relationship,” said Le Xuan Son, the chief organizer.
A scandal erupted during the 2012 contest forced organizers to disqualify then Miss Vietnam hopeful Vuong Thu Phuong just hours before the final after photos of her wedding were spread on social media.
Phuong, the Vietnam Supermodel 2011 winner, had included a confirmation of not registering for marriage, the equivalent of being single in Vietnam, which was certified by authorities of where she lives, in her application to the beauty pageant.
Son said organizers this year will seek help from the Ministry of Public Security and an “independent channel” to verify applicants’ registration information.
