Ton Nu Tuong Vy, former student of the Ho Chi Minh City Open University, has recently been chosen to attend the United Nations Alliance of Civilization (UNAOC) – EF Summer School in America in August.
The 24-year-old girl is among 75 young people selected from 15,000 applicants in 75 countries. During the one-week course, participants will discuss peace, security, development, media, and religion.
According to the organizers, the highly interactive program will immerse participants in the essentials of global citizenship. Seminars, workshops, and roundtable discussions will challenge them and increase their impact as leaders in their fields.
“This summer school is a chance for me to challenge myself to higher standards and to learn more,” Vy told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper. Vy said she had to present 3 main points in her profile to convince the course’s organizers.
“First I listed my experiences in the past, present and what I could do in the future. Besides, I presented my opinion on the East Sea issue and religion. Religion, politics, development and human rights are among topics of the course,” she shared.
“I will bring up the East Sea issue for discussion during the time I visit the United Nations’ headquarters. The course also gathers several friends from places which are related to the East Sea issue like China, Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia. I want to discuss with them and send the message of peace for the East Sea to the United Nations.”
Vy said she will bring with her a bamboo dragonfly in the hope of bringing the image of Vietnam to international friends.
“This is a very nice Vietnamese folk toy. My friends in other countries said every time they look at the dragonfly keeping balance by itself, they feel encouraged and stay strong. So that would be a meaningful gift to present.”
The Vietnamese girl added she herself has to present the image of Vietnamese people.
“When I talk to you, I am Tuong Vy. But when I come to other countries, people know me as a Vietnamese person. The way I speak, present myself, and behave with people will reflect the image of Vietnamese people.”
Vy will join the United Nations Alliance of Civilization – EF Summer School in New York from August 16 to 23.
